A wonderful resource that has been used in our children's centre in their weekend clubs. The manual has been used primarily with 10 to 13 year olds and it has tackled issues such as bullying, decision-making, confidence building, healthy living, power of money and co-operation. All the issues that have been tackled are crucial in re-building the self-confidence and the physiological approach to education for the pre-secondary and secondary school children.

The quality of this pack is such that obtaining support across Wales for its translation was easy and we are very grateful to all the personnel who backed this venture and thereby tipped the balance in getting it funded, and to the Welsh Assembly Government for making the funds available. The pack speaks for itself - when I present it to teachers on the training days they fall on it with delight. It not only provides a clear skeleton of lessons under four topic headings, (each lesson with a one sentence descriptor so that they know what is what) but each lesson has between 6 and 8 additional ideas for developing the topic. The lesson objectives are there at the top of the page; each lesson has a word box and a list of poems and stories to support the theme and so teachers immediately understand how this will fit into their everyday teaching.
The pack is so flexible that matching it to the Welsh PSE Framework is not an issue. Many schools now use it as the basis for planning their PSE provision across the two Key Stages, needing only to identify where the subject links are and what additional specific material they will weave into the mix, such as the main areas of health education and some more specific work around citizenship and the environment. The Tacade pack provides the starting point for all these topics and give teachers confidence to plan and carry out a really exciting programme.

We have used this manual in the weekend clubs for older children. The varied nature of the subjects has encouraged the children to join the clubs, and the most popular project has been the sections on citizenship and careers. The children who take part in these sessions have spent a long time suffering from the effects of social exclusion and therefore, they are subject to bullying and other dangers that the communities pose to them. The citizenship project has offered very useful advice on keeping safe in the community and how to deal positively with bullying. The careers project has brought about clear thinking from the children about their futures and until now, the children had not received any information or had any help from their families about careers and their hopes for the future.

‘Very thorough, well researched and relevant. A
good range of activities, coherent and accessible’
DfES Observer
This pack charts a clear path through these sometimes problematic waters, integrating fully with the citizenship orders, cross-referencing learning outcomes and attainment targets. It is comprehensive, clear and user-friendly. Although no single teaching pack could ever claim to be the only resource necessary, if this pack was the only one a school could buy, then they could do no better. I have been very pleased to trial a few of the activities, and will be putting the pack on my school shopping list as soon as possible.

This term and last term I have taught from the section on Criminal Justice and found it to be very useful. The contents equally support other sources too and this makes the book up-to-date, accurate and more importantly relevant.
Citizenship is a broad remit, but I feel this book has identified key issues and in doing so has expanded these themes to make it a very good teaching aid for all concerned.

Independent Reviews:
This extensive pack, designed to fulfil Citizenship teaching requirements at Secondary level, includes 31 practical lesson plans, along with background reading for teachers, case studies, and many links to further information. The pack consists of a large folder with lesson plans which can be removed and photocopied. The folder is in two halves, for ages 11 to 14 and 14 to 16, and covers topics including: human rights, the criminal justice system, parliament, solving conflicts, fair trade and sustainable developement. The lesson plans are clearly laid out, with objectives, introductions, main activities and opportunities for reflection. There are also several suggested extension exercises. The pack also includes 14 case studies which bring alive activities carried out by other teachers.
