Keys To Drugs
|
|
Under the drugs button, ‘Keys to drugs’ could you take out the text and replace with the following:
The aim of the four ‘Keys to…’ resources is to provide key sessions on important health issues that may be used in mainstream Primary and Secondary Schools and that are inclusive of children and young people with a visual impairment. All pupil/student sheets are in large font, with a FREE CD Rom included that will enable the pupils/students to increase/decrease the font as required.
Each resource contains ten key sessions covering aspects of knowledge and understanding, attitudes and skills development with activities utilising a variety of learning styles.
The approach enables schools to deliver the main aspects of drugs education as recommended by all the major guidance documents for schools, including Drugs: Guidance for Schools; Personal and social framework for 7-19 year olds in Wales; and Curriculum for Excellence.
NEW AVAILABLE SPRING ‘Keys to drugs…’ for young people aged 11-14 years old.
The majority of young people do not use illegal drugs. However, use does increase from the age of 11 years upwards. A balanced, co-ordinated and cohesive programme of drug education is essential for young people at this stage. This resource provides ten easy to use sessions covering key issues about drugs following the ASK model: attitudes; skills development; and knowledge and understanding.
The resource includes the following sessions:
- What do you know already about drugs?
- How would you act in different situations?
- What are the risks from using illegal drugs now and in the future?
- What do you think of drugs and drug users?
- What are other people’s attitudes to drugs?

Life Matters - New!
A board game for young people aged 13-19 years old about life's opportunities, risks and challenges... sexual health and behaviour, alcohol, tobacco and other drugs |
|
Life Matters has proven to be extremely effective in engaging young people in discussions about a variety of issues around sexual health and sexual behaviour, alcohol, smoking and other drugs.
The pack consists of:
- 1 dice
- 6 playing tokens
- 6 female bodies with 7 body parts
- 6 male bodies with 7 body parts
- 55 questions about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs
- 55 questions about sexual health and sexual behaviour
- 12 ‘life’ cards
- 1 Life Matters board
It can be played by up to twelve people and takes about one hour to complete. The winner is the first player to finish with all seven body parts intact! Response to the game has been very positive and indicates that it is an excellent way for young people to learn about important issues relating to their health and wellbeing, including sexual health and behaviour, alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
The game throws up the unexpected and shows how it takes knowledge and understanding of a wide variety of issues and sound decision making to become a winner. The issues raised will inevitably continue the discussions and inevitably lead to requests to replay the game, since only a fraction of the questions will be raised during any one game.
Feedback Received:
‘I thought I would email you to say how we enjoy the Life Matters board game. I have played it with several different groups and all the young people enjoyed it so much that they did not want to put it away. It really is valuable resource'

It is a vital part of our education programme to prevent young children from smoking. This manual is used with 5 to 11 year olds and has raised the dangers of tobacco abuse and has also offered a very practical yet fun approach in tackling a sensitive area. The sessions have had such an impact on the older children that they are now trying to discourage their parents from smoking and a number of adult residents have asked for their own training sessions to try and combat tobacco addiction.

Independent Reviews:
Oxfam Development Education (GC Link) Bulletin
For many years educationalists have considered 5-7 year olds are too young to learn about smoking. However, recent research undertaken at John Moores University shows that children as young as five are aware of cigarette smoking, even if their parents do not smoke. This resource, part of the 'Skills for the Primary School Child' series, has been developed to address children's concerns as identified in this research.
The book contains 23 lessons divided into five topics areas:
- Our bodies and keeping healthy
- The environment
- Relationships, responsibilities and seeking help
- The tobacco industry
- Image and advertising
This book enables children to increase their knowledge, explore relevant attitudes and values and develop appropriate social skills to enable them to make informed choices. The workshop activities are designed to help teachers, parents and others to develop a whole school approach to smoking education within the life-skills framework.
The full danger of smoking is often not recognised. Over half of all regular smokers eventually die from the habit. In the UK smoking kills more people than traffic accidents, accidental falls, murder, manslaughter, suicide and HIV infection combined! Most regular smokers take up the habit as teenagers. It is therefore essential that young people are given the opportunity to learn about the dangers of smoking and how the tobacco industry targets young people. Information alone is not enough so The World of Tobacco provides teachers with the material to help young people the skills to make informed choices.

The teachers present on the evening, and ones I have subsequently seen have all been very appreciative to Lions for the sponsorship of this resource, which they feel will be useful to plan a peer alcohol education project, and lessons.
They are especially impressed with the CD Rom which will allow them to use specific sections when required for lessons. We hope that young people can make healthy informed choices when it comes to drinking alcohol in their formative years, and the resource will be very beneficial ensuring they receive suitable information.

‘The resource stimulated some excellent
discussions’
Teacher, EBD Unit
PSHE Co-ordinator from Selby High School reports on trialling a new resource from Tacade:
We at Selby High School have used Tacade resources to support the delivery of topics in PSHCE lessons for a number of years and have found them extremely useful. They are easy for the students to access, use terminology that the students can understand and are teacher friendly which is a real bonus. There are also plenty of photocopiable handouts to make planning easier.
I was asked if I would pilot a new resource 'On the Booze again!' with students in Key Stages 3 and 4 and as I was in the process of reviewing and changing alcohol schemes of work I agreed. Any new materials are always worth a look!
The resource, which is aimed at young people who are already likely to be involved with drinking alcohol, covers a wide range of alcohol related topics. It provides students with the opportunity to discover facts about drinking and the possible links with other social and anti-social behaviours.
A variety of different approaches are used to deliver the material including questionnaires, research opportunities, trigger points for discussion and draw/write exercises.
The students in our school particularly enjoyed using the draw/write exercises as they were seen as a tool that all could use, irrespective of academic ability.
Those who were good at drawing completed the picture boards in this way, those who couldn't draw very well explained their ideas and there were those who used a combination.
Two such exercises, 'What might happen' based on a group of young people drinking and starting a fire and 'Girl on a bus' which involces some girls drinking on the back seat of a bus, obviously annoying other passengers, were particularly popular with students. Each scenario can lead to a consideration of consequences, emotional feelings, risks and decision making and it is amazing how students' minds work. Some tremendous discussions took place as a result of these exercises. Other topics covered include alcohol and the law, links between alcohol and sexual activity, possible medical issues and how to drink alcohol and stay safe.
In addition some interesting background papers are included which provide relevant statistical information, issues relating to cultural differences and approaches to alcohol, effects of parental/carer drinking and the important 'where, why and what' relating to alcohol consumption and young people.
I believe that this will prove to be a valuable resource and one which is well worth a look. I will certainly be using 'On the Boose again' at Selby High School!

young people

Feedback Received:
This resource has been used in our Adult Training Centre with the 16 to 19 year old residents during the weekly 'Looking after myself' sessions. The young women have found the several sessions that have dealt with issues out of the resource incredibly beneficial. In particular, the family planning, relationships and getting home safely sections have definitely made a difference to the young women as Sunraye and they are now much more aware of their actions in regarding relationships and spending social time in the community.
Save the Family
Sex education and the issues of drug and alcohol abuse are already comprehensively covered in our schools but these packs will help reinforce the messages we are trying to get across. The materials are excellent, particularly as they are designed for use with young people of all abilities. This Tacade resource aims to enable young people to make use of their own ideas, experiences and concerns as well as increasing their awareness and understanding of sexual health issues, and the risks associated with alcohol use and drug taking.
We want young people to be able to explore attitudes, values and feelings about sexuality and gender issues, prejudice and discrimination. It will also help them build on their personal and social skills.

‘Leicester City PSHEE & Citizenship Advisory Service with support from Leicester Safer Partnership and Government Office East Midlands are running the Alcohol Education Project (AEP) which sees PCAS (PSHEE & Citizenship Advisory Service) providing all our secondary schools with Alcoshots packs and running training around it's use that forms the basis for moving forward and prioritising the development of alcohol education in our schools. The pack with its photocards encourages the development of creative and reflective discussion and mirrors/reinforces aspects of SEAL approaches. The project sees PCAS using its team of PSHEE advisory teachers actively modelling the use of Alcoshots in the classroom alongside teachers and offering coaching and observation. We feel that the pack can be a powerful tool within the PSHEE Drug Education when its use is effectively planned and built into the entitlement curriculum for all students'
