Up in Smoke - a smoking
education resource for those working with
11-16 year olds - New Available in Spring
|
|
'Smoking is the largest preventable cause of death in the United Kingdom. Evidence shows that the prevalence of smoking among young people increases between the ages of 11 and 16 which is why this resource is essential for those working with young people, since every day approximately 450 young people are 'recruited' to smoke.
Up in Smoke contains ten easy to follow tried and tested interactive sessions using a variety of teaching and learning styles. The emphasis of the resource is on the benefits of being smoke free.
Sessions include: 'What do you already know about smoking?'; 'The effects'; 'Passive smoking'; 'Does it cost the earth?'; 'Advertising'; 'Women and smoking'; and 'Helping someone to stop'.

‘'In trialling the resource, I found this really useful as there is nothing similar available for this age range'... Drug Education Consultant, North Yorkshire

Keys To Smoking
New Edition 2010
|
|
The aim of the four 'Keys to...' resources is to provide key sessions on important health issues that may be used in mainstream Primary and Secondary Schools and that are inclusive of children and young people with a visual impairment. All pupil/student sheets are in large font, with a FREE CD Rom included that will enable the pupils/students to increase/decrease the font as required.
Each resource contains ten key sessions covering aspects of knowledge and understanding, attitudes and skills development with activities utilising a variety of learning styles.
The approach enables schools to deliver the main aspects of drugs education as recommended by all the major guidance documents for schools, including Drugs: Guidance for Schools; Personal and social framework for 7-19 year olds in Wales; and Curriculum for Excellence.
NEW 'Keys to smoking...' for children aged 7-11 years old.
The vast majority of Primary School pupils do not smoke. It is, therefore, the ideal time to introduce the issues and to encourage pupils to consider the benefits of remaining smoke-free in their future life. As in 'Keys to alcohol', the importance of information and involving parents/carers has been acknowledged through specific activities and other links.
The resource includes the following sessions:
- What is in tobacco smoke?
- How does smoking affect the body?
- What are the wider effects of smoking?
- What are the advantages of being smoke-free?
- How can you help others to be smoke-free?
Feedback Received:
‘I thought it was very good. It includes everything a teacher would need, including information to give parents. There is a good range of activities and a good fact base for teachers. I like the detailed plans, the prompt sheets and the pupil activity sheets'
Deputy Head, Bratton Primary School, Wiltshire
‘I am very impressed with the resource and find it very informative, clear and easy to follow. A good range of issues, activites and areas included'

Life Matters - New!
A board game for young people aged 13-19 years old
about life's opportunities, risks and challenges |
|
Life Matters has proven to be extremely
effective in engaging young people in
discussions about a variety of issues around
sexual health and sexual behaviour, alcohol,
smoking and other drugs.
The pack consists of:
-
1 dice
-
6 playing tokens
-
6 female bodies with 7 body parts
-
6 male bodies with 7 body parts
-
55 questions about alcohol, tobacco and
other drugs
-
55 questions about sexual health and sexual
behaviour
-
12 'life' cards
-
1 Life Matters board
It can be played by up to twelve people and
takes about one hour to complete. The winner is
the first player to finish with all seven body
parts intact! Response to the game has been very
positive and indicates that it is an excellent
way for young people to learn about important
issues relating to their health and wellbeing,
including sexual health and behaviour, alcohol,
tobacco and other drugs.
The game throws up the unexpected and shows how
it takes knowledge and understanding of a wide
variety of issues and sound decision making to
become a winner. The issues raised will
inevitably continue the discussions and
inevitably lead to requests to replay the game,
since only a fraction of the questions will be
raised during any one game.
Feedback Received:
'I thought I would email you to say how we enjoy the Life Matters board game. I have played it with several different groups and all the young people enjoyed it so much that they did not want to put it away. It really is valuable resource'

2011 Edition. Now available in coil-bound format |
|
This resource is the only
comprehensive programme of smoking education for 5-11 year olds
in the UK. It aims to provide children with an opportunity to
increase their knowledge and understanding of tobacco related
issues, to explore attitudes, feelings and values, and learn
practical life skills in relation to cigarettes and tobacco.
The World of Tobacco contains:
- 23 lessons including extension activities that encourage
the involvement of family and carers
- Photocopiable classroom materials
- A series of workshop activites for use with the whole
school community
- Background papers and information sheets to enable teachers
to address this sensitive issue with confidence.
These materials were developed in partnership with the Roy
Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.
Feedback Received:
It is a vital part of our education programme to prevent young children from smoking. This manual is used with 5 to 11 year olds and has raised the dangers of tobacco abuse and has also offered a very practical yet fun approach in tackling a sensitive area. The sessions have had such an impact on the older children that they are now trying to discourage their parents from smoking and a number of adult residents have asked for their own training sessions to try and combat tobacco addiction.

Independent Reviews:
Oxfam Development Education (GC Link) Bulletin
For many years educationalists have considered 5-7 year olds are too young to learn about smoking. However, recent research undertaken at John Moores University shows that children as young as five are aware of cigarette smoking, even if their parents do not smoke. This resource, part of the 'Skills for the Primary School Child' series, has been developed to address children's concerns as identified in this research.
The book contains 23 lessons divided into five topics areas:
- Our bodies and keeping healthy
- The environment
- Relationships, responsibilities and seeking help
- The tobacco industry
- Image and advertising
This book enables children to increase their knowledge, explore relevant attitudes and values and develop appropriate social skills to enable them to make informed choices. The workshop activities are designed to help teachers, parents and others to develop a whole school approach to smoking education within the life-skills framework.
The full danger of smoking is often not recognised. Over half of all regular smokers eventually die from the habit. In the UK smoking kills more people than traffic accidents, accidental falls, murder, manslaughter, suicide and HIV infection combined! Most regular smokers take up the habit as teenagers. It is therefore essential that young people are given the opportunity to learn about the dangers of smoking and how the tobacco industry targets young people. Information alone is not enough so The World of Tobacco provides teachers with the material to help young people the skills to make informed choices.

The materials comprise 49 easy to use trigger sheets that may be used on a one-to-one or on a group basis to stimulate discussion about a range of issues relating to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. The trigger sheets are intended to enhance current curriculum provision and may be integrated easily into the ongoing work, utilising a variety of learning and teaching styles.
Feedback Received:
'Teachers rated this resource positively ... it was felt to
be useful for a wide range of age groups and activities or the
basis for a lesson at school'
Research Works Limited Evaluation Report
|
Independent Pre-testing and Trialling:
The findings from this qualitative pre-testing/trialling indicated that teachers rated this resource positively. The majority of respondents felt the resource had a range of core strengths which led them to view the resource as 'very usable' in PSHE lessons. These views were further supported when the resource was tested within the classroom situation.
'ASK' was highlighted as an instant accessible and versatile resource for both teachers and pupils. These were key strengths. The trigger sheets format was rated as ideal for the variety of PSHE classes and teaching situations. Equally less confident teachers felt more secure with the trigger sheet approach. Coverage of specific drug topics and the range of exercises and approaches employed was considered comprehensive. The layout, design clarity of language and tone were also positively rated. In practice, pupils also enjoyed using the resource.
The resource structure, 'ASK', was praised. Equally the range of trigger sheets enhanced the potential usage of the resource as a regular element within drug education classes. Overall, the resource was felt to be useful for a wide range of age groups and abilities within mainstream education.
